Psalm 23:1-6
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
The writer of today’s devotion in the Upper Room experienced an unexpected loss years earlier, which sent her on an emotional journey, eventually leading her to God. She found comfort and courage from the 23rd Psalm. Interestingly, for this believer, it took intentional study of scripture to lead her to peace. It did not come “automatically”, when she found God. God knows how each of us works, and what we need. We have talked a lot about the 23rd Psalm. It wasn’t until I was a (very) mature adult that I really studied the psalm and since then have found abundant comfort in the words.
Holy Lord, you put your Spirit within us, and lead us to all we need for abundant life with you. I am truly thankful you led me back to studying your Word. You are with me always. Amen

Psslm 23:1-6 I Will Fear No Evil
Today, we have another devotion written using the 23rd psalm. The author had been a very fearful. person and finally found these words offered help. This Psalm both grew her faith and offered the comfort she so badly needed. We have spoken about the poetic beauty of these words. I even wanted to try to say them each day. I haven't managed saying all of it everyday, but some of it most days. While I haven't failed in my effort, I haven't actually succeeeded either.
Prayer: Gracious God, I know these words will bring me comfort in these chllenging times. Holy Spirit give me a nudge each day please. AMEN
Psalm 24:1-6
FOR THOU ART WITH ME
The Upper Room writer speaks about losing someone she was very close to. It’s safe to say that we have all, at this point in our lives, experienced loss. I certainly have lost people that were very dear to me, none more than my own parents. The grief was profound, but God blessed me with parents who were believers and who led me down a path to trust God. This gave me much comfort when they died. In my heart, I believe they both embraced God and Jesus as their Savior and I believe they knew that he would be with them when they made their journey to paradise. The beautiful Psalm …
Psalm 23:1-6
I noticed this morning’s Upper Room contributor is located in Nigeria. The ongoing conflict in northern Nigeria, with daily life constantly on edge due to radical Islamic terrorist activity must be very anxiety provoking. The 23rd psalm in these circumstances is not some abstract theological idea, but a literal leaning on God’s protection against evil, wicked forces. Nigeria is but one of too many places in the world where the church is trying to survive and thrive despite persecution. When we add our prayers to theirs, their hedge of protection is even stronger.
Prayer - God of protection and safety, please watch over our brothers and sisters in Christ who walk with You in places where their faith…
