A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, June 8

Joshua 23:6

”Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.“

Joshua was getting old, and recognized the end of his walk on earth was near. He reminded the Israelites they were to follow the Law of Moses after he (Joshua) was gone. They were to recognize all God had done for them and continued to do for them. I am pretty sure God will continue to remind me of this as I try to gracefully accept another change in pastoral leadership. As much as I have loved and grown with pastors in the past, I believe I have learned a most important truth from Pastor Gil. What I have learned makes it a bit less unsettling going through another change. I have learned how to recognize and benefit from the constancy of God’s Word. And of course His Word is what connects us to Him. This doesn’t change. I am so thankful. Amen

Joshua 23: 6

“Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left”

Being strong in my faith, keeping focus on God’s laws. This is what this verse tells me. I will do my best to follow the words written for us in the Bible. I will attempt to stay focus and not lose sight of what God wants of me. Sometimes it is difficult to know exactly what that is, but I will pray for the grace to know what is expected of me. Staying focused is not always easy for me, but I will attempt to follow God’s teaching…

Joshua 23:6 So be careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the book of instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left. These are some of the most important dying words of Joshua as the people of Israel finally, after 40 years, are close to the promised land. Joshua’s death will bring a change in leader ship, so he is reminding his people that they clearly have all they need to keep their path straight. They simply need to follow what Moses wrote. After leading the people for so long, he understands that change can be difficult but if they stay the course given to Moses by God, all will be well. Change for al…

Joshua 23:6-8 Like sports, living a life for Christ isn’t always fun. There are certainly fun parts, and the end result is the most incredible prize imaginable. But it’s hard too, and it takes dedication. The land is at rest and Joshua is now old, before he dies he called the people together and gave them commands to help them where they most likely would fail. In (Joshua 23: 6 ) Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left,. The same is true of the our Christian life today. We can very easily forget how…

Joshua 23:6

The NRSV uses the word “steadfast” where the NIV uses “strong.” I like the former because it seems to better convey a sense of perseverance in light of the changing circumstances of life. The growth of our pastor’s ministry is cause for joy, but his departure and that of his lovely family carries with it a sense of loss. Ministries come and go, but Becky’s point regarding the constancy of God’s word and maintaining the vitality of our own personal ministries is precisely the one we should be taking from the reading and this chapter in our church life.

Prayer - God of change, we rejoice in the opportunity for our pastor to expand his ministry and pray…
