A Daily Devotion for Friday, May 9

Luke 15:24

‘For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

This story is used so often to illustrate the unfailing love of God. No matter what we do, where we go, or how we live, God is always willing to take us back in. In fact, he is waiting for us the entire time. He forgives us, and accepts our repentance. Not only is this important for each of us in our own lives, but it is important for us to accept this truth for others. If they have asked for forgiveness, they are forgiven.

Holy Lord, help me to accept all who turn to you as forgiven and reborn. I am thankful for your acceptance of me with all my faults. Help me to be as accepting of others. Amen

Luke 15:24

I think we have all strayed at one point or another in our lives. Thankfully, as I got older, and as the genuinely important things in my life surface as priorities, the distractions that pulled me away from you are gone, the gap between needs and wants narrowed, my greatest need being the presence of you in my life.

Dear Lord, thank you for always being there for me with Your open arms. Guide me to never ever stray. Amen.

Luke 15:24.

In a Christmas Cantata I've sung in, there is a narration about the Prophecy of a Messiah. It ends with the words, "the world watched and waited." This is precisely what the Father in our story did. Everyday his son was gone, he watched and waited. It's as if he knew his son would return and he would be ready to take him back home. That is what the story is all about. No matter what we've done or how long it takes, our God is there waiting for us to come home--and when we do, he embraces us with forgiveness and love.

Prayer: Gracious God, may we never forget you are always watching and waiting for u…

Luke 15:24

For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

A father eagerly forgives his lost  son when the young man returns in humility and repentance. All this  leads to a great celebration. Even today Jesus teaches that God never gives up on us, he cares about everyone,  restoring those who have fallen, and will always forgive and  welcome them back. The prodigal son knew he was wrong and needed help. He also knew he was lost and needed to be found. He had hit rock bottom and it was easier for him to humble himself enough to accept the loving generosity of…

Luke 15:24

This timeless story has been told and lived in every generation. The author of the Upper Room reflection this morning is yet another living, breathing example of the resilience and redemptive power of faith and prayer done with perseverance. My season away from the church was not as dramatic as his, but it had some scary elements. While I may have been away from the church, faith never left and the prayers of those who loved me were answered in my return. I will never look back and will continue to pray for those who remain convinced of their ability to live life without faith.

Prayer - Faithful God, send Your Spirit on all who struggle with the…
