A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, June 4

Hebrews 10:19-22

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

This one (very long) sentence packs so many important truths. For me, the most important concept is that we no longer need to have any fear when we approach God. We have been forgiven. Jesus has provided a way for us to approach and know God. There is no longer a curtain keeping us at a distance- God has sent his Holy Spirit to dwell within each and every one of us! I need never fear that God is too angry with me to listen, or too big to turn to me when I need Him and call on Him. These verses have never meant more to me than they do this morning. What a blessing!

Holy Lord, I am so very thankful for your Holy Scriptures, available to me for wisdom and truth. Amen

In the Temple in Jerusalem, there was a place called the Holy of Holies, the Most Holy Place, an inner sanctuary for God’s presence. It was viewed as the junction of Heaven and Earth.…

Hebrews 10:19-22

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

The veil in the temple was a constant reminder that sin prevented humanity to enter beyond it because they were considered unfit to be in the presence of God. The fact that the sin offering was offered annually…

Hebrews 10:19-22

The writer of Hebrews is reminding us of the dramatic events the day Christ was killed. The curtain to the Holy of Holies was literally torn. We were freed from the need of a human intermediary between us and God by the sacrifice of Jesus. This allows us to draw as near to God as we are to our earthly loved ones. Confession and cleansing from sin is as near as our place of prayer and our place of prayer can be anywhere as long as it is with a sincere heart. That is ultimate freedom.

Prayer - Glorious God, I give thanks for the freedom You have provided through Jesus and lament my misuse of that freedom.…
