A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, June 30

Psalm 92:1-15

It is good to praise the LORD

and make music to your name, O Most High,

proclaiming your love in the morning

and your faithfulness at night,

to the music of the ten-stringed lyre

and the melody of the harp.

For you make me glad by your deeds, LORD;

I sing for joy at what your hands have done.

How great are your works, LORD,

how profound your thoughts!

Senseless people do not know,

fools do not understand,

that though the wicked spring up like grass

and all evildoers flourish,

they will be destroyed forever.

But you, LORD, are forever exalted.

For surely your enemies, LORD,

surely your enemies will perish;

all evildoers will be scattered.

You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox;

fine oils have been poured on me.

My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;

my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,

they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;

planted in the house of the LORD,

they will flourish in the courts of our God.

They will still bear fruit in old age,

they will stay fresh and green,

proclaiming, “The LORD is upright;

he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him. ”

Isaiah 35:1-2a

The desert and the parched land will be glad;

the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.

Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom;

This morning, I had not yet looked at the readings, but for some reason picked out the picture first and titled and dated the post. Still before reading the scripture, I looked more closely and noticed that the flowers in the picture were all “past their prime.” Yet the color and texture are so beautiful! In the garden where I found them, they were spectacular, standing upright and proud. I had snapped a picture of them, and thought to myself, “I have never seen that unusual, beautiful flower!” What does it matter if they are young or old? They are beautiful, and add do much to the beauty of God’s garden. Just like all of us, we have more to add to God’s creation.

Holy Lord, so much of the beauty of your creation goes unnoticed. I know that I was created exactly as planned. May I be thankful, and a good steward. I am blessed with good health and plenty of energy. Help me to serve you in the ways you set before me. Amen

Psalm 92:1-15. Isaiah 35:1

Psaslm 92:14. Even in old age they will still produce fruit, they will remain vital and green. Although these words refer to both Palm trees and the Cedars of Lebanon, I read it as it applys to me. Old age does not mean we are done serving the Lord. Some may have to find new and different ways, but there is always something that anyone can do.

Prayer: Gracious God, Thank you for my health and desire to work for you. AMEN

Psalm 92:1-15/Isaiah 35:1-2a

Thank the good Lord that evil and bad times are temporary just like the storms in my life. God sees to it that evil will never win. I often think about how strong and resilient coconut palm trees are. They are naturally adapted to withstand severe storms including hurricane force winds. The are extremely flexible and can neatly bend in half under harsh conditions. Palm trees can live to be 100 years old and still bear fruit! These are remarkable trees. The palms mentioned in this Psalm, like the coconut palms we know of, show us that righteousness is heavenly designed to withstand even the worst of storms and with that strength we can bear the fr…

Psalm 92:1-15/Isaiah 35:1-2a

The psalmist writes the righteous will flourish and bear fruit in old age. This is in tune with being in legacy mode as I wrote about yesterday. Today I leave for Scout camp and will be at Hidden Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday for the next seven weeks. As I walk the camp, checking in with youth and adults, campers and staff, my task is to not only bear fruit for the Kingdom, but to also plant seeds that outlast my time there. May it be so.

Prayer - God of all fruitfulness, please walk with me at camp this summer. I trust you will give me the right words to say to support, encourage and uplift…
