A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, June 11

John 6:35

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

I am reminded this morning of the song, “People Need the Lord.” We need Him like food and water, but from a spiritual perspective. We would feel it like a hole in our chest if we turned away from God. Sometimes I feel this hunger, especially when I have let myself drift off of God’s path to start off on my own. I don’t drift off intentionally, it just happens from time to time (although much less often now.) The hunger for God is a reminder, a spiritual hunger and thirst, turning me back to God.

Holy Lord, you know my heart. You know that I want to and need to be close to you. I know you are always here with me, but sometimes I am so full of other things I can’t see or find you. Thank you for your patient love. Amen

He goes on to explain…

John 6:35

This verse is a perfect ending to a week reflecting on hunger for God. Being created in the image of God, people instinctively feel the need to come to terms with the transcendent, something greater than us that gives our existence meaning and purpose. Some people resist or simply choose to ignore that hunger and deny the existence of God. For the Christian, the incarnation provides ongoing fulfillment of that hunger as we are fed, as often as we take it, the Lord’s Supper. If this is the feast, their are many other smaller meals and snacks that serve as spiritual food; prayer, reading and study of Scripture, worship, all the spiritual disciplines. Our spiritual food is as…
