A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, December 30

Matthew 7:24-29

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

We are given this reassuring reminder that staying with Jesus is the Way. It is like choosing a foundation of stone instead of sand. Taking the analogy a step further, there is also a permanence with Jesus. Just like the foundation which stays put in a storm, Jesus never leaves us, never becomes “less”. When we choose to have Jesus in our lives, we are making a decision which will (and has) protected us for the rest of our lives. We don’t need to remember to switch to “on” or to “activate” Jesus. He is already on the job. But I can be grateful, and give thanks, and love Him for being my Creator and Savior.

Holy Lord, I am thankful for your many blessings, protections, and your gifts of grace. May I never ever forget that you are on the job for me and for my loved ones. Thy will be done, Lord, and not my own. Amen

Becky, transforming

Matthew 7:24-29 The Solid Rock

You often hear people say they have faith, or they are religious. or spiritual. These are all good things to be, but my hope is that their faith or spirituality has a good foundation and is not just a "feeling.". For most of us that foundation is the words written by God and the words and life of Jesus. That is the strong foundation that keeps us steady through life's storms.

Prayer: Gracious God, The wisdom of our Bible stories are the rock foundation that guides and protects us on our life's journey. AMEN

The solid rock

(Focus: those whose homes have been destroyed

Matthew 7:25

And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

To have your house built on rock means to live a life that is steady and  unshakable, one that cannot be moved when the inevitable storms of life blow against it. While obedience to Jesus’ words is not a protection from the troubles; it is protection while in the troubles. Storms will come and go. You are either in or coming out of a storm. Nevertheless, if you’ve built your life on the foundation…

Matthew 7:24-29

Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine is the oldest masonry fort in the US, built by the Spanish empire in the late 1600s and still stands strong today. The foundation and walls are made of strong coquina stone. The fort survived many, many attacks. Because of the strength of the stone and its ability to absorb impact, cannonballs had little impact on the fort and the fort was never breached. This provides a perfect analogy for the foundation of Jesus Christ. Choosing the perfect foundation, one that is strong and will not crumble, will keep us safe and that is what Jesus does for me. He is that foundation, He is that perfect stone, He is m…

Matthew 7:24-29

It is easy to take our foundation for granted. It is when the storms finally come that we find out how strong and resilient the one we have built for ourselves and our families can be. We can never cease being vigilant, however. It is never too late to reinforce the foundation already in place with the spiritual disciplines we have developed over time. The erosion caused by one storm must be tended to in preparation for the storm to come.

Prayer - Gracious God, please extend Your mercy in the storms of life. Help me keep my foundation strong in the face of adversity. Help me take heart in believing all things work together for good for…
