A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, August 24

I Timothy 6: 17-19

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasures for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

I do wonder what that last verse is saying. How do we lay up treasures for ourselves, and why is that necessary? Maybe Paul is speaking of changing ourselves, even sanctification. Will we be better equipped to enjoy Heaven if we have traveled further in our own journey to sanctification? Certainly being generous and giving, with the right heart, will move us toward this.

Holy One, I know I must be more generous. It is what you ask of me. It is a way for me to be more like Jesus. Amen

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Our God has given us what ever it is we have, and how much we have. Whether we are receiving unemployment, living paycheck to paycheck, receiving social security, making six figures, or living in our car– we are wealthy. I definitely am not wealthy but maybe middle-class. There are plenty of things I can’t afford. Yet my husband and I were able to provide a good education for our kids, and have enough food to eat. In this late stage of my life, all I want is what I need. I am as generous with my money as my income allows. The message Paul is teaching Timothy is those having money must be generous as well. The…

1 Timothy 6:17-19 17. Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18. Tell them to use their money to do good. . . . We live in a world that seems obsessed with money and power. Little thought is given to what to do with that money, except to buy and buy to show others all you have. Sadly this also applies to some who profess to love God. There are several televangelist who preach some of the words of God to millions. They accept all the money given…

I don’t think I know any truly rich people, but I do know many “comfortable” people. Those who are Christians seem to be more willing to do good deeds and share what they have. We don’t have to be commanded to do these things, but the constant hearing and reading of the Word has created a normal reaction to…

1 Timothy 6:17 - “As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”

Having reached a certain age, my email is inundated daily with multiple messages about how to live large in retirement. Golf, fine dining, luxury automobiles, exotic vacations are held out as the keys to happiness. I will gladly pass on all of this fluff. God has provided everything I need to enjoy this season of my life. The question now is focused on how I will develop the discipline, guided by faith, to translate what has been…

I read this and say, I am not rich. Then I think and realize that I am very rich compared to some people in this country and world. I am also rich in the faith I have in God. I put all my hope in God and have the faith that he will provide for me. God has been very generous to me. He has given me a wonderful life.

Dearest Lord, thank you for…
