A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, August 12

ree

Deuteronomy 32:7

Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.

Psalm 22:3-5

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;

you are the one Israel praises.

In you our ancestors put their trust;

they trusted and you delivered them.

To you they cried out and were saved;

in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

I love today’s devotion. Over the last few months, the Holy Spirit has been bringing this message to me, time after time. It strengthens my faith to think about those who lived before me, who sought God, who learned to know and love Jesus, who came together in worship and believed. It is wonderful to have the saints before us to look back on and to look up to, but what about the average, everyday folks who got up in the morning and prayed to God? They believed and kept on believing, generation after generation, seeking God. This is part of God’s grace- we have these ancestors through no special deeds of our own. They are a gift from God, to us.

Holy Lord, I am so very thankful for those who have gone before me, every last person who sought you, who looked to you and prayed to you with their whole hearts. You have left them as examples and guideposts for me. May I live up to this priceless gift. Amen

Deuteronomy 32:7

My take away from the devotion and the Deuteronomy verse is that the ancients honored and respected their elders and all the previous generations. They understood much could be learned from them. The wisdom we often seek comes from those who went before us. I often find that, today, the elderly are often thought less of and their life's work forgotten. The administrator of an assisted living facility where I volunteer, tells all her staff, the family/work history of each resident so they can better understand who they were, not jus…

Deuteronomy 32:7/Psalm 22:3-5

These verses echo the image of the great cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 12:1. A critical part of faith formation involves standing on the shoulders of those who came before us and being willing to be a pair of shoulders that those after us can stand on.

Prayer - Lord God, I give thanks for my spiritual mentors and pray that You would grace me with the opportunity to be a spiritual mentor, maintaining a remnant of the faithful in a hurting world. Amen

Deuteronomy 32:7 / Psalm 22:3-5

Today I am thinking of the VA Chapel in Dayton, Ohio. This is a chapel where my parents were married and several years ago, on what would have been my mother and father’s 60th anniversary week, I took my mother there and went into this chapel for the first time. It was dedicated in 1870. It is a small stone chapel with beautiful stained glass windows. The scriptures today made me think about how many services, funerals, baptisms, and weddings have taken place there over many generations, of how many faithful believers have crossed the threshold of that small chapel, of how many have gone there for comfort. I am thankful that I have ha…
