John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
These first verses from the book of John are so powerful. Today, the verse that I am noticing is the fifth verse: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. This verse also speaks to the writer’s reflection on how God has been present for her in the bad times as well as the good. When we remember that God’s light shines in every darkness, we need never feel alone or forgotten. When bad things happen, God is there, by our side. No matter what.
Holy Lord, you are a mystery that I will never understand, and yet my life has no meaning without you. I do believe that darkness can never overcome your love for your creation. Thank you for staying by my side, never leaving. I am forever thankful for the gift of your son, my savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

There is so much packed into the beginning of John’s gospel. He sets the stage for us to know that God is with us now and has always been there since the beginning of time and is with us throughout our earthly future, no matter our circumstances and He will be there beyond through Jesus Christ our Savior.
Dear God, thank you for being with me always. Thank you for being the light in my joy and for bringing light into any sorrow I may experience and for Your Son Jesus who is the light for the world. Amen
