A Daily Devotion for Thursday, September 24

Luke 9:23-27

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

These verses are the very words of Christ. We are told clearly that in order to be with Jesus through eternity, we must accept and follow him closely in this life. I am instructed to give up earthly goals which do not serve God. As I grow older, I feel Jesus at my side often. This is such a blessing and a gift! What did I ever do to deserve this kind of companionship? I will try to continue to walk with Jesus, and to look and listen for His guidance in all of my daily decisions, large and small.

Holy Lord, today I am especially thankful for the gift of Jesus Christ in my life. I am never alone, and will never be alone. Amen
