A Daily Devotion for Thursday, October 31

Daniel 1: 17

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

Daniels’s understanding of “visions and dreams of all kinds” seems to be a special God-given gift. He was able to interpret what a dream said or predicted. This gift saved his life and the lives of others. But this is not something we see anymore. God does not seem to give this gift to help mankind in our age. But it has occurred to me that we no longer assign any importance to our dreams. And it was not actually the dream itself, or the meaning of the dream, which saved lives. It was Daniel’s ability to use his God-given gift in the right place and at the right time which saved lives. This is the message for me this morning. God has given me gifts. Do I use them to further His Kingdom? Do I step out of my comfort zone?

Holy Lord, help me to be like Daniel, to recognize and utilize my gifts, no matter how ordinary they may seem. Amen

Daniel 1:17

I believe God gave us all gifts, some obvious, some not so much. Daniel’s, of course, was the gift of dream interpretation. I hope that whatever gift I am blessed with that I use it always for good.

Dear Father, thank you the gifts that have given us to use, help us to use them wisely. Amen

Daniel 1:17

To be held a prisoner in a foreign country with many different rules rules and regulations and without the things important to us is difficult. This was Daniel’s lot in Babylon. He did have friends with him and he did have his faith. He knew his God was with him and he would be faithful to his God. He did not compromise about this. His reward was his ability to be trusted by the king and helped him understand his dreams. There were no angels here just Daniel interpreting the dream for the king. Daniel knew God was on his side and helping him. Today we are very skeptical of people who try to explain dreams. …

Daniel 1:17

As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Daniel is a story of a younger person being faithful to God. Most important , the life of Daniel in the Old Testament gives evidence of God's faithfulness. God knew Daniel – He knew Daniel's needs and what Daniel was struggling with – and it's clear that God cared for Daniel. Every good gift we have comes from God. You do not need to use your gift within our church life in order for our gift to be of value to God and others. The entire world belongs to…

Daniel 1: 17

The interpretation of dreams remains an enduring mystery in our time. Sigmund Freud wrote a book by that very title in1900 and while I’ve never read it, I would venture to say he and Daniel would not likely agree on much. I don’t know how much scholarly writing on this is done today, but a quick search yields many articles in the popular lay press on dream interpretation. Again, without having read any of them, I would be (pleasantly) surprised to find any that framed dream interpretation through the lens of God ‘s messaging. As for me, interpreting what I cannot remember when I wake up seems to be an impossible proposition. Would knowing someone like Daniel…
