A Daily Devotion for Thursday, March 31

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

“What he has decided in his heart to give…”. This makes me think about tithing, and the need for prayerful consideration of what our gifts to the church should be. I am including myself in this statement. The interesting word to me is “cheerful.” If I don’t agree with decisions made in the (larger) church, should this affect my giving? Am I cheerfully giving for Christian works in my community and around the world, or reluctantly giving to an organization I may have issues with? Prayer is the only way for me to figure this out; I need God’s help.

Lord above, help me to figure out where and how to help your church. I would like to be a more cheerful giver. Amen

2 Corinthians 9:7 This is what real giving is. Whether to church or the many other causes that need our help. God knows our hearts. If we give in this way, we will be cheerful givers. Prayer: gracious God, thank you for this lesson. You know my heart. Amen

2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Paul is telling us that God wants us to give with our heart and whatever we are able to share. We should always give voluntarily, not because we were coerced into giving. It should be in accordance with what we receive. Giving is not a tax or obligation, it is only a gift when we give it freely.

Dearest Lord, we may not have a lot to give monetarily, but we do have time and love that is in abundance. Giving of our time and love is something we all can share.…

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Our personal thoughts and attitude is more important than the amount we give. If we can only give a small amount, God cares more about how much we give, according to our ability to do so. He still loves that we give what we can. This reminds me of scripture in Mark 12:41-44. The story of the widow's offering is a perfect example of humble devotion to our father , and the holy affection for him influences the true nature of our giving. Whatever we offer to God ought to be th…

2 Corinthians 9:7

At a superficial level, Scripture seems to present us with numerous paradoxes. For example, in many passages we are instructed to give sacrificially and in this verse we are expected to be cheerful about it. Given more thought, however, I can appreciate the inner joy that comes from seeing an offering of time, talent or treasure that stretches us beyond our comfort level become a source of relief, rescue or redemption for another who is suffering or in need.

Prayer - Merciful God, may I find joy in sharing so that others may benefit. Help me to be a cheerful giver. Amen
