A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, May 7

Philippians 3:14

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

In this passage from Philippians including verses 7-14, Paul talks about continuing to strive toward God, not to give up, and to consider the prize which is ahead. Our prize is not financial success or recognition or honor in this world. Our prize is ahead, and for that we need faith, hope and trust. And how we spend our life brings us closer to that prize. Senior years can be painful and difficult in this life. But I am convinced God did not intend for life to be this way. Our purpose and our goal should be clearer than ever as we grow older. We are closer to God than we have ever been, and will grow closer still.

Holy Lord, help me to always keep my eyes on you, and not on this world. Help me to love my neighbors and encourage those who especially need to find you. Amen

Philippians 3:14.

As we age, we often wonder how long we can continue to do all we do. When the time comes to rethink our duties, hopefully we will look ahead and find ways to continue serving, but maybe in different ways. When the elite runner can no longer compete, do they realize they would make a terrific coach or do they keep looking back and lamenting what they can no longer do?

Prayer: Gracious God, As my life changes, may I adapt to the situation and continue to find ways to serve you. AMEN

Philippians 3:14

I think from time to time we all dwell on the past, some more than others…an opportunity missed, actions we wish we could redo, words we wished we had spoken or words we wished could be taken back, wasted time…but I will say, as I get older the less I dwell, the past cannot be changed and I try to focus more on the future. As I journey towards the time when I will take my last steps on this earth, I try to make a meaningful difference and keep focused on the gift that awaits me.

Precious Lord, please guide me to be your instrument here on earth. Thank you for salvation, the greatest gift in my…

Philippians 3:14

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Paul simply writes about the goal of pursuing Christ until he meets with Him after his life. This is exactly the  focus for believers today as well. Every day is a brand new  start, let go of yesterday’s disappointments and give God a chance to do something wonderful for us today.  As I continue to age, i should not worry so much about whether I will die first, or if Christ will return. Rather, I should press on toward whenever and however I meet with Christ.

Philippians 3:14

Our immediate goals in life vary from season to season, but our overarching goal should come down to heeding Jesus’ call to salvation and sanctification. The urgency of that call for those who have caught this vision increases over the years. A friend of mine who is now in his mid-80s frequently says, “I want to finish strong.” There is no question in my mind he will boldly witness for Christ right up to the end of his earthly life. Therein is a lesson and model for me and for us all.

Prayer - Merciful God, grant me the perseverance to stay focused on the most important prize of all, Your call heavenward in Christ Jesus. Amen
