A Daily Devotion for Thursday, June 6

Deuteronomy 8:3

“He humbled you, causing you to hunger. And then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

Moses reminds the Israelites of their dependence upon God and his mercy. Even though they will be crossing into their promised land, they will still need God, must obey Him and rely on Him. Today I realize this verse speaks to our need for God always, even when we feel we have everything we need. I must always remember- remind myself-of God’s hand in my life. I am not here with this family and this home because of my good habits and healthy lifestyle. I am here by the grace of God and his incomprehensible love.

Holy Lord, all I have and ever will have, and all I ever will be, I owe to you. I am truly thankful. Amen

Deuteronomy 8:3

Many years ago there was a sitcom on TV that took place at a girls private school. I remember one episode only. One of the girls was struggling with feelings she didn’t understand—feeling lonely and lost even with so many friends. She knew something was missing—but what? She confided in a friend and I was impressed with her answer as she was probably only 15/16 years old. She simply said maybe you’re missing God. No more, just that. Nothing about a religion or a church. Just God. To this day, I am impressed by both these young women. I’m not sure this story line would air today. This was probably the 80’s I think.

Deuteronomy 8:3

Yet another one of those Bible Scriptures that was taught to me but what part do I remember, Man can’t live by bread alone…interesting the part which really I love is he humbled you ,,, this fits perfectly with hunger for God. I guess I really am hungry because I’m always listening to hear the word of the good Lord.

Dear Lord, thank you for the reminder’s of hunger and satisfaction of being feed to we are full. Help me to be humble and to listen for the word. Amen

Deuteronomy 8:3

And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

When things go well, it is easy to praise our success to natural abilities and learned skills, or even good luck, instead of saying “thank you”to God. When our bodes are not fed, we begins to weaken noticeably.  God's Word is just as essential to spiritual life as food is to our physical life. Just as we must discipline ourselves to provide and…

Deuteronomy 8:3

Today we read the source of Jesus’ rebuke of Satan when He was tempted in the desert that we reflected on yesterday. Though the contexts were different, the essential message is that We can trust and rely upon God to meet our needs. It may not be the way we want the needs met. I’m sure the Israelites would have preferred bread to this strange manna on the ground each morning. Nevertheless, their need for sustenance was met, and Moses firmly reminded the people of its source. I may want steak, but if God provides a PB&J I will be nourished all the same and, more importantly, be assured I am in God’s care.

Prayer - Generous God,…
