A Daily Devotion for Thursday, July 10

Matthew 14:19

And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.

The writer of today’s devotion focuses on Jesus giving thanks before feeding the crowd, and sees that even Jesus gave thanks to the Father for bread. Jesus knew better than anyone what and how God provided for his people, from the most commonplace breathing in and out to the miracle of feeding thousands. Jesus knew all about healing a wound and healing a soul. He could walk on water and calm a storm. But he always recognized his Father’s hand in all things and was thankful. I can be better and more intentional in my giving of thanks to God for all things, both ordinary and extraordinary.

Holy Lord, I am truly thankful to you for all of your creation and your daily providence. I am most thankful for Jesus, your son. Amen

Matthew 14:19

When my son was working on his Eagle Scout project at Arlington Community Services, a local food bank, I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting the director, a woman by the name of Kathy Womack. She was known for her beautiful and eloquent thank you letters that went out to the various organizations that donated to the food bank. True to her form, after the project was complete my son received a beautiful letter of thanks and spoke so kindly of him and his troop at his Eagle Scout ceremony. I talked to her after at the ceremony reception about all the donations they get and how it must be quite a task to send such beautifu…

Matthew 14:13-19.

As i read today's devotion, I thought of our communion service when the Pastor lifts the bread high and speaks of sharing the body of Christ. The author then spoke about how often we pray the Lord's Prayer (and others) but we just say the words - not thinking about their meaning. Every once in a while we should slow down and break the prayer into sections and think about the meaning. I often tell people we should pray very slowly as if a child were saying it. Jesus gave thanks for the food to feed the multitude so we should give thanks for his prayer, but slowing down and thinking about each phrase.

Prayer: Gracious God, You'v…

Our Daily Bread

(Focus: to see God in the ordinary

Matthew 14:19

Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to

This is very similar to our July 7th scripture where Jesus feeds Five Thousand. (John

6:11.)While the feeding of 5000 ,is one of Jesus ‘s greatest miracles The author in  the upper

room this morning made me think seriously about  “Jesus in the ordinary”

To "see Jesus in the ordinary “ recognizes God's presence and teaches us Christ's…

Matthew 14:19 Giving thanks for even the simplest gifts from God changes one’s outlook and approach to our day to day slog through life. The calls of loons and owls lulling me to sleep at camp, hot showers, morning coffee, summer tomatoes, the crack of the bat at Fenway the crisp air and radiant foliage of autumn, sitting with Becky in the evening as she knits another treasure for someone are among the countless blessings that constitute my daily bread for which I look to heaven and give thanks.

Prayer - Thank You, Lord for my daily bread and may it fuel my life, my spirit and my faith. Amen
