A Daily Devotion for Thursday, December 30

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:

If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Alas, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

We are not meant to be solitary creatures. Unfortunately, in our culture, we are led to think we can stand alone. So many people are alone in this world because it is so easy for us to look the other way…How many do I talk to every week who are lonely? This morning I feel moved to a new place and a new understanding.

God above, you have provided these words to me today along with a fire in my heart. I am so thankful! Amen

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

In his search for wisdom and learning, Solomon discovers that few things in life hold more value or satisfaction than true friendship . Solomon speaks on the importance of companionship and the benefits of people working together. Two are better than one in a work setting because a pair of laborers can accomplish more than a person working alone. Two are better than one because, if one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. If you’ve ever spent a night camping out in the colder weather you know that two are better than one because two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how ca…

Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 Since the beginning, since Adam and eve, God knew we needed companionship. These verses reinforce that concept. We are meant to be part of the community – not to stand alone. This pandemic has made that very difficult for those who are already alone. Even though some progress has been made, there are those who suffer that loneliness daily. Today, we have letters, cards, phone calls, FaceTime and zoom. But none of these offer the warmth of a hug! I know most of us are doing our best to help, but I know it is not enough. Prayer: gracious God we need you more than ever to help us through these trying times. I ask for your comfort for those…

The value of companionship with others is so very important in life. Being alone is not what was meant to be. Yet some of us are tested with this type of life, and we sometimes wonder why. God himself realized that we were not…

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Much has been made in our culture of the concept of “rugged individualism.” In reality we are hardwired for fellowship. From the beginning in Genesis we read “it is not good for man to be alone.” Even more striking in this passage is the allusion to a cord of three strands. My reading of this is that Solomon was inferring a reality centuries before Jesus made it explicit. Where ever two are gathered in His name, He is there among them. Fellowship begets strengthening by the Holy Spirit.

Prayer - Almighty God, thank You for the gift of fellowship. While You are always with us, it is good to share fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ on…
