A Daily Devotion for Thursday, August 4

Writer: ontrakkontrakk

Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.”

This passage reminds me to be “out there” with my faith and my actions. I am not to boast, or call attention to myself, but there is no good reason to hide my faith. It does bother me to think of my life as an example to others, and maybe I need to take a closer look at that.

Father God, I try to always be open and honest about my faith, but I know there are things I could handle better. People will look to believers for guidance, but also to find fault. Help me to be ready for the first, and fearless of the second. Amen

Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine….Hide it under a bushel? NO! I’m gonna let it shine. Don’t let Satan [blow] it out! I’m going to let it shine …

As a young girl in Sunday school, I loved signing this song wit…

Matthew 5:14–16 If you’ve ever been to New York City and been out and about at 2 AM, you understand the term, “the city that never sleeps.” Lights shining brightly and still people and traffic moving about. That is how our faith should be; shining brightly all the time for people to see. That is how Jesus describes our faith in these verses. Sometimes people misunderstand these words to mean we need to boast about our deeds. No, we simply go about our outreach project and let the results speak for themselves. Prayer: gracious God; may our work as Christians shine brightly for all to see what we do in your name. Amen

Matthew 5: 14-16

As I said yesterday, being a disciple means putting God first. I do this the best way I can in this life I live. I can do good works not because I are trying to make the world a better place. I do good works so that people will turn and glorify God. As a disciple of Christ, I will do my very best to treat people with kindness, love and respect. In this way, I am being a disciple of Christ in today’s world.

Dearest Lord, help me to always do what…

Matthew 5:14-16

Faith hidden for fear of rejection or ridicule is faith without strength or power. Jesus taught letting our light shine was not insisting others believe what we do, but in good deeds that glorify God in heaven. When our faith leads us to obey Jesus’ new commandment to love one another, it is faith as brilliant as the sun.

Prayer - Lord, my faith can be a light in the darkness only if I let it shine. Grant me the confidence to be part of Your light. Amen
