A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 18

Hebrews 13:2

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

This is a verse we have all heard many times. Considering angels to be messengers or helpers from God, sent specifically to a place, at a time, for a purpose, really gives this new meaning for me. If I am not welcoming, or I ignore, or turn away this person, I am in essence turning away from God. Of course in today’s world, it is not safe to randomly bring strangers into our homes. But this verse can apply to many other encounters, certainly. God reaches out to us in many different ways, and this verse reminds us that sometimes he sends angels, who we may not immediately recognize. I must be watchful and always kind.

Holy Lord, help me to remember to be open to welcoming you, even if I may not recognize the messenger. Angels don’t always dress in white and have wings. I am sorry if I have ever turned away from a messenger you have sent my way. Amen

Habrew 13:2

I have always loved this verse. I try to remember this direction when I want to hesitate or decline to do what’s right. During the height of the COVID crisis, I saw lots of reminders to “BE KIND” in the midst of our anxiety. Very good advice. We really do not know and may never know what the result of our actions may be. I’m not sure if the stranger asking me for help is really an angel, but who am I not to heed this advice.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me to remember these words when I am asked and hesitate in any way. Amen.

IF YOU CAN BE ANYTHING, BE KIND!

Hebrews 13:2

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Do angels appear to us in the form of people, angels are not visible except on rare and special occasions.  (I don’t believe that people become angels) We are all familiar  with the many angels appearing in the gospels. I wonder if I have entertained angels unaware. And so my thoughts are, you never know how God might bless you through others. Make it a habit of just being kind and generous, whenever possible. Remembering the old adage, you never know who is watching you so be on your best behavior. The point is to show the love of…

Hebrews 13:2

This is my favorite verse about angels. It is a reminder to me that we are surrounded by an angelic host; an invisible, spiritual world that, on occasion is manifest in human form to carry out God’s plans and purpose. What strikes me this morning is that these angels may not necessarily be there to help or protect me personally, but very well may be serving to show God where my strengths and weaknesses are regarding how I live out the faith I profess. Am I willing to help those in need? Do I give with no expectation of return? Am I free of prejudice and bigotry? Do I love my neighbor as myself? Am I willing to…
