A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 16
Psalm 28:6-9
Praise be to the LORD,
for he has heard my cry for mercy.
The LORD is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
and with my song I praise him.
The LORD is the strength of his people,
a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
Save your people and bless your inheritance;
be their shepherd and carry them forever.
I love the choice of this Psalm with the devotion today in the UR. We probably all can remember a time or two in our life when we were very afraid, and how relieved and loved we felt when someone came to our rescue. God comes to our rescue, too. Unfortunately we may take some of these experiences for granted. “It all worked out. Things just fell into place, etc.” God brings us peace and serenity when we call out to Him. This is a miracle, each and every time it occurs! Just the words, “a peace that transcends all understanding” make me feel better because I know that God keeps His promises.
Holy Lord, you never are far from me. Help me to do my part, to pray, to listen, and to be watchful for your mercies. Amen

Psalm 28:6-9
The illustration in today’s Upper Room and the passage about God’s protection reminded me of an episode that took place during our family hike in the Appalachian Trail. Too long to relate here and I’ll share the details time permitting on Tuesday. It was a grueling few hours that I would never want to endure again, but through it, gained a sense of God’s sovereignty, care, protection and the mystical bond of familial love.
Prayer - Lord, whenever I become
impatient, particularly when confused or lost, please help me recall Your mercy one cold wet night in Massachusetts some 17 years ago, a night you “saved Your people and blessed Your inheritance.” Amen
