A Daily Devotion for Friday, November 24

Psalm 34:18

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

These verses read so similarly! When I first read the psalm, I thought I would see a footnote if I looked at verse 5:4 in the book of Matthew. But my translation does not indicate that the Beatitudes are directly based on any verses in the Old Testament. Clearly, though, this sentiment is present throughout the Bible. God is with us when we suffer. He is there to comfort us. His presence through the Holy Spirit is constant. For me the challenge is remembering to turn to him when I need him most. I have always held a firm certainty that God is with anyone facing death, especially when they are in fear. And when we mourn, God gives us peace as we turn to him.

Holy Lord, I thank you for your presence everywhere, always. We need you and need you especially when we mourn and when we are full of fear. May we remember to seek you in all difficult times, wait for and listen for you. Amen

Psalm 34:18 and Matthew 5:4

It is important that as we read these two verses, we remember that our lives will not always be perfect. We will mourn loved ones and our hearts will be broken, but we will never be alone. God’s comfort is as close as we let it be. The comfort our faith offers us is such a wonderful gift.

Prayer: Gracious God. I know you are with me always. The comfort that offers is immense. Amen

Psalm 33:18

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,

Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.God wants to speak to us sharing his heart and thoughts with us. In order for this to happen I need to quiet MY own mind so I can hear what he is revealing. So many times my mind has been to busy to hear anything he says. In the fast paced and noisy world we live in today it is important to separate ourselves from it and have the time of being still and quiet open to his steadfast love.

Through it…

Psalm 34:18 / Matthew 5:4

Even in this season of my life I can feel awkward and at a loss for what to say or do when facing those who mourn. I am reminded of a conversation yesterday during our Thanksgiving gathering. Kenny was remembering episodes from his childhood when he was brought to tears by the tears of his sister, Kay, when she was in distress. When we simply mourn with those who mourn, we may bring the other closer to God’s soothing presence than any platitudes, “words of wisdom,” or perky encouragement we can offer. Just be there for them as God is there for them. This brings needed comfort.

Prayer - Loving God, who mourns when we…
