Matthew 9: 36-38
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ”The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
We are invited to be part of the process of spreading the good news. Not only are we workers ourselves, but Jesus directed his disciples to ask God for more workers. I had not noticed this part of the verse before. May I be bolder, may I listen to the Holy Spirit within me, and may I be a worker who finds and calls other workers to help with the harvest- this I pray to you, Father God. Amen

Matthew 9:36-38
At first I did not understand that this scripture is about Evangelism. Jesus knew the needs of the many people who did not know him, He felt compassion for them, and referred to them as lost sheep. Sheep who need a Shepard. He wants us to help lost people as if we were the Shepard. He uses a metaphor of a farmer needing help in the fields. So much harvest and not enough workers to do the harvesting. You and I are called to be his workers in this harvest. He wants us to see what he saw, to feel what he felt, and to do as He did. Love lost people like Jesus does. Each o…
Matthew 9:36–38 In these verses, Jesus saw a need, felt their hopelessness, and then knew what to do. Of course, we pray first and then try to see how we can help. We then become one of the workers in his field. There are situations, however, that are such that we can see and feel the need, but there’s not much we can do. The situation in Ukraine it’s not something I can actually physically do anything about it. However, I see and feel their pain. I then pray and try to learn about the problem and donate to a cause that may make a difference. I never thought of praying as evangelism until I read this verse. Prayer: gracious God, oh…
Matthew 9: 36-38
How often do we think of evangelism as an act of compassion? In the current cultural environment many treat evangelism as an act of aggression, even an assault. I am reminded of a story about Penn Gillette, the comic/illusionist entertainer and part of the duo, Penn and Teller. He is an atheist, but unlike many of his atheist friends, is respectful of people of faith. He once remarked that a believer sharing their faith is indeed engaging in an act of compassion. His reasoning was that if one believed that without God, people were consigned to an eternity of torment and they did not try to bring others to God, it would be evidence of monstrous selfishness…
Matthew 9: 36-38
38 “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
We should always work through Jesus. Praying is the way. We are the ones who work as evangelist here on earth, but it always starts with God. Prayer is the most powerful tool we have to work with. Through prayer we are asking God to show us how to spread His word.
Dearest Lord, I will spend more time each day praying for more workers to help spread your word. I will also pray that I know how to help in this calling. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
