A Daily Devotion for Friday, August 12

James 1:25

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it- not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it- they will be blessed in what they do.

Again I am struck with how these words fit humanity yesterday, today and tomorrow. I am so often inclined to hear something, be moved by it, and then to forget. This is the human condition, I suppose. It does make following Christ a challenge in the day to day of life. A life following Christ every minute, in every decision, would not be easy, but it would set us free from a lot of negativity and worry. This should not be so difficult for me to put into practice without forgetting!

Holy Lord, you live within me, always wiling to show me the way. May I never forget. Amen

James 1:25

But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

One of the ways that believers lose faith is we forget to practice the lessons we have been taught. We can become careless in our Christian walk and drift away from the promise that leads to eternity. James insists that the one who looks intently at the perfect law of liberty and abides by it will be blessed. James also refers to the gospel, which, even though is called a law, it is not a law made with requirements and approvals. Rather, it…

James 1:25 But the man who looks intensely into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.

We are to look, study, and act on God‘s words. Some are better than others at doing all three. I think act is the most difficult for some. To me, there seems a little point to reading and studying if you don’t then do things in his name. I feel as if this verse is reminding us to be “doers” of the word.

Prayer: gracious God I thank you for making me look for opportunities to do things in your name. Amen

James1:25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it---not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it---they will be blessed in what they do.

We as Christians follow the laws that give us freedom. This law that gives me freedom guides me internally through the Holy Spirit. I believe in God’s words and these words guide me in my daily life. I am given the power to do what is right and to practice that discipline that will guide me in my life.

Dearest Lord, you have given me freedom. The freedom to choose, to live as you intended and to know when I have overstepped. Thank you for putting the Holy Spirit…

James 1:25 Looking intently seems to be a critical component of studying God’s word. Whatever our life’s work, it took intentional and focused effort to learn the skills necessary to do it well. My measure of how intently I study Scripture should be the intensity I used to become and function as a physician. Learn, absorb and most importantly, do is the pathway to living the victorious Christian life.

Prayer - Lord, grant me the patience and perseverance to look intently at Your word daily and then put it into action as I strive to be Your ambassador to those I encounter each day. Amen
