Matthew 5: 2-4
…and he began to teach them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Jesus made it very clear during his time on earth- he was here for the broken and the downtrodden. Those who were sad or discouraged were welcomed by Jesus. In my own life, there are times I become so discouraged or disappointed or negative, I have the thought, “God doesn’t want to hear any of this from me. I am a disappointment to Him.” These verses tell me that this is exactly when I should turn to God.
Holy Father, you are a healer, a mender of brokenness. Mend me when I am so broken I don’t have the sense to seek you out. Amen

Each beatitude starts with blessed. Jesus surprises us with a much different version of a blessing than we would expect. He explains How being blessed is much different when everything in our lives are going well but we can be blessed even when everything seems to be going wrong. People do not normally think of mourning as a blessing. It is a sorrow. But knowing there is a kingdom of heaven, mourning becomes a blessing because the mourners will be comforte…

These verses help me to understand what brokenness is like as a human. Barbara and I are reading “Life of the Beloved” by Henri Noumen, for a discussion this Sunday at church. I wasn’t clear about being broken, as he talked about it. I certainly have mourned during my life, and sometimes questioned God about why someone had to suffer so much, but Faith keeps bring me comfort in the long run.

This verse is one that has great meaning for me. In losing my son, Ed recently my faith in God brought me comfort. I realize that the time I had with Ed was precious as all our lives are in this short time we have on earth. It is my belief in God and His promises that gets me through these difficult time.
