Genesis 1:1-2

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

I do love this image of the Spirit of God “hovering over the waters.” Water was essential for God’s planned creation. It was not an afterthought. God knew his creation would be reliant on the land, but the water would be essential. We not only need water to live, but we are literally made up of mostly water! (55-60% on average) This was all part of God’s plan. After thinking this all through, I am feeling amazed at the importance of this simple substance. I will not worship water, but I will respect it as a most vital part of God’s creation.

Holy Lord, whenever I stop to really look at and wonder about the plan behind your creation, I am amazed beyond words. Water is a part of all life. It was and is, along with the formless land, essential to your plan. I am so thankful for even this small bit of understanding. Amen

Genesis 1:1-2

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

I chose to take a different route to the importance of water in the creation.  When I saw the word water it brought baptism to mind. Water, was it here, did GOD separate the land FROM the water. The scripture saids and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters. Yes God created everything.

Water Baptism symbolizes the need for our sin to be washed clean. It represents the truth that our old…

Genesis 1:1-2

Water is so essential to everyone and everything around us. God created it, the escaping Egyptians complained about it, David used water as a sacrifice to the Lord, and John used water to describe God’s words as living water. Our earth and all in it need water to survive, yet it is not evenly distributed throughout the planet. Some have so little and it harms the people and the economy of those areas, I try to think of this as I use, and try not to waste, water. Although abundant for us, that could change as our climate changes. God would want us to be mindful of this resource he created. I believe the UMC has seve…

Genesis 1:1-2

There’s nothing like starting at the very beginning. Yesterday we read about light and today we read about something that preceded light in the creation story. Water is foundational, the medium from which all of creation emerged. This drama is replayed in the birth of every human being. The Holy Spirit hovers over the waters of our birth as well as our rebirth in baptism. Jesus provides the living water we need to sustain our souls as the physical water we drink sustains our bodies. The power of adding two simple hydrogen atoms to an atom of oxygen is literally the power of life itself.

Prayer - Creator God, thank you for the gift of life as we…
