A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, March 9

1 Samuel 2:3

”Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.“

How wonderful to be reading words of scripture spoken by a woman! Hannah is praying to God the day she dedicates Samuel to him. I wonder if she is thinking of anyone in particular when she speaks the words about arrogance. When I read them, my first thought is, “Well, at least I am not arrogant.“ But I am not fooling God with this automatic thought. Sometimes arrogance is hidden away, but it is still there. I know I struggle with this, and should pray to have God point it out to me when it affects my words and behavior, or even just my attitude.

Holy Father, help me to see my arrogance, and help me to feel it when it stirs. I am no better than any other of your creation. I know this is true. Amen

1 Samuel 2:3 do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.

The Lord knows what is in our heart and mind. He doesn’t give credit for proud, arrogant talk. He gives credit for our deeds which really speak to who we are and what we believe. Not all arrogance comes from words though. We must be aware of our actions that show our arrogance.

Dear Lord help me to walk humbly before you. Amen.

1 Samuel 2:3

Deep understanding of the phrase, “the Lord is a God who knows” in this verse should melt a heart of arrogance. God knows my every fault, every spiritual blemish, every sin. With such a mountain of evidence, every word or deed of arrogance is a lie to the world And to God. Arrogance is the offspring of our original sin of pride, the fatal error or believing we are masters of our own destiny, rejecting God. I would like to believe that my walk with God has tempered the arrogance of my youth, but that is for others - and God - to determine.

1 Samuel 2:3 “Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed”

I found the following today as I attempted to clarify my understanding of arrogance.

Arrogance diminishes wisdom.” “Arrogance is a creature. It does not have senses. It has only a sharp tongue and the pointing finger.” Simple. God resists the proud because the proud resist God. Arrogance will not admit to sin. The heart of pride never confesses, never repents, never asks for forgiveness.

I once talked to a very good Orthopedist and he said to me, “I am an arrogant SOB,” I know that but it’s because I am…
