Mark 9:14-29
When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.
“What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.
A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
“You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”
This story speaks especially clearly to me today. Why is it so hard to believe that when something is beyond our control, it is not beyond God’s control? I have a friend who I talk with often about our grown children. We have struggled with some of the same concerns over the years. We have talked about how difficult it is to step back and allow things to unfold. There are many things we cannot control. But we must never give up on our faith in God, who is fully in control. Sometimes we really do need to “Let go and let God.”
Holy Lord, You are in control, and I am not. I know that you have a plan. I pray to you to help me to be aware of, to see, your perfect will and to live accordingly. Amen

Help my Unbelief
(focus: parents of sick children
Mark 9:24
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
God assures us that if we honestly seek him. If we act in faith on the knowledge of God, we will be rewarded when we share the gospel. We must be honest in seeking the truth, plus this same honesty applies to the same people we have shared the gospel with. When we seek God, we will find that we are rewarded with his intimate presence through the Holy Spirit. When we are facing unknown Illness of our children like the author in the upper room…
Mark 9:14-29
When things in my lifes “go south” or those I dearly love are in peril I tend to want to “fix” things, the right suggestions, words of wisdom, breaking my brain to find the “fix”. All that energy is better spent in fervent prayer even when my faith is shaken. Faith and prayer are the best and only true “fix”.
Precious Lord, please cast out any doubts of faith I might have. I know You hear my prayers and know what is on my heart. Amen
Mark 9:14-29
Spiritual warfare is real. It is not some overwrought fever dream of wild-eyed fundamentalists. As we discussed last night, Jesus ushered the kingdom of God into our world, but it is not yet fully realized. Our world remains beset by demons and we are surrounded by their evil works. There are many we can cast out with the strength of our faith alone. Belief can be a strong force, but as fallen humans we can have a persistent nugget of unbelief that allows demons a foothold in our lives or in the lives of those we love. Jesus made us aware of this when he delivered the boy in today’s reading from Mark. They central point of His…
