A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, September 3

1Peter 5:2-3

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Right now I am not in any position of leadership. But when I look around me at other people my age and in my church and social family, I can see that many of them are in positions of leadership, with or without having any title. Again, they lead by example in most cases, and not always by directing people to do what they ask. Thinking through these, I see attitude and demeanor, honesty, integrity and trustworthiness as essentials. I hope that these are qualities I also hold as important in how I deal with others through the day, whether in a leadership position or not.

Holy Lord, help me to remember that when others see me and interact with me, they may not know that I am a follower of Jesus; but when they learn that I am, it will not be a surprise. Amen

As a leader of the church, if your heart is not true, if you are not really committed to Jesus Christ and His message, than your efforts will be in vain. As his flock, they may think that you as their leader is considered a committed leader for  God, but don’t  forget they KNOW you. They SEE daily actions, they hear your words in everyday discussion and if those actions and words do no…

1Peter 5:2-3

This passage highlights the key differences between a leader and a boss. A true leader is both able and willing to get on to the front lines with those they lead to instruct, encourage, correct and support their team. Leadership like this reflects the love of God and unlike an aloof, unapproachable and unhelpful boss, has the potential to raise up new leaders who are eager to serve.

Prayer - Gracious God, I pray Your blessings on all who lead in whatever capacity. Give them all a heart for service and eliminate all thoughts of dishonest gain and lording their position over others. May all who lead by guided by Your principle of servant leadership. Amen
