A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, September 28

Psalm 10:4

In his pride the wicked does not seek him;

in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

I really like this verse a lot. It reminds me how easy it is to turn away and ignore the Holy Spirit. If I don’t see it and acknowledge it, why would I obey it? The same holds for accountability. If I don’t see it and acknowledge it, why would I feel accountable to it? The Holy Spirit is God in me. I am His. I am His servant, and although I am a sinner, I can never turn away. God will never turn away from me, and I will not turn from Him.

Holy One, you are steadfast and never turn your back. I am thankful beyond any words. You are alive in my heart and a part of every decision I make. Help me to stop and listen for you. Amen

The Bible is very clear that God will hold all people accountable before Him on the day of final judgment

Psalm 10:13 Why does the wicked revile God and why does he say to himself He won’t call me to account. Matthew 12:37 Jesus: “I tell you, on the day of judgment, people will give an account for every careless word they speak…” Romans 14:12 So then each of us will give an account to God.

I/We simply do not think regularly, nor seriously enough, about this. Forgetting or neglecting accountability, blaming others for my/our sins, engage in disrespectful speaking, wasting my/our time on things of this world, and all the while believing that no actual accounting will ever happe…

Psalm 10:13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”?

The wicked seldom think about accountability, so this verse is not a surprise. What is surprising is that God is acknowledged in the last phrase -- “He won’t call me to account”. God will hold everyone to account whether we like it or not.

Dear Lord I know I will be accountable for what I do and who I am and so will try to follow what I believe to be right in your eyes. Amen.

Psalm 10:13 Why do the wicked get away with despising God? They think, God will never call them to account. In researching this verse, I saw the words despise, condemn, renounce, revile, and spurned.. Not once did I see that they didn’t believe and know there was a God. They knew there was a God, they just didn’t want to follow his laws. They must believe that if you renounce, etc., you won’t be held accountable—like the child who covers their ears so they won’t hear the scolding, BUT God sees and hears all that the wicked do. They will be held accountable; whether on earth or somewhere else. Prayer, Gracious God, thank you for this reminder that you are in charge o…

Psalm 10:4

Pride may well be humankind’s original sin. Just as a poisonous gas sucks life-giving oxygen from a room, pride pushes God out of our lives. The prideful would rather die in their toxic space without God, than open a window and receive life. I have had enough of pride, having seen and experienced its toxic effects, but need to be warned often to reject it.

Prayer - Jesus, meek and humble of heart, lead me away from the sin of pride and keep my heart and mind focused on humility and service. Amen
