A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, October 3

John 8:31-32

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

This is an often quoted phrase-"the truth will set you free." It is also scripture which I have many times tried (unsuccessfully) to explain to myself. Being a believer does not make my life 100% easy or happy or worry-free. But there is a freedom I feel from fear of the future, and I don't spend much of any time worrying about eternity, and whether it will be pleasant or painful. I am less fearful of growing old, as a believer. This is what Jesus' words are bringing to me this morning.

Holy Father, we are so blessed to have the very words of Jesus, your Son, to lead us and reassure us. Thank you for the freedom from fear you offer to us with your promises and your grace. Today will be a blessed day. Amen

John 8:31-32

Jesus and his teachings and his sacrifice is what sets us free. The freedom he gives is the freedom to follow him. Today in choir practice, both songs we were singing had lines about freedom. “Come Learn from Me” says give to me your every burden and from your burdens you will be free. “His Eye is on the Sparrow” says, I sing because I’m happy-I sing because I’m free for his eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me.

Prayer: Gracious God, You’ve given me the gift of freedom. May I always use it wisely. Amen

John 8:31-32

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Jesus had just finished telling the people that He was going away to a place they cannot follow. He tells them that in order to really be one of His disciples they must hold on to His teaching. Doing this will allow them to know the truth and be set free. Nothing has changed in over 2000 years. Even today, as a believer in Jesus you and I must hold on to His teachings. That is we must listen t…

John 8:31-32 Much like a web of lies imprisons the one who is trapped into telling more and more lies to cover the previous ones, the web of lies spun by Satan has the potential to imprison us. Believers hold the key to the cell in their hands every time we pick up the Bible that contains the teachings of Jesus. The Way, the Truth and the Life flows from God’s Word, freeing us from the falsehoods of the evil one.

Prayer - God of Truth, cover me with your full armor, including the breastplate of truth, so that I am prepared at all times to do battle with all Satan’s attempts to deceive.

Amen
