A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, March 1

John 17:20-21

”My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me…”

The more I think about unity, the more difficult the concept seems. It is simple, yet seemingly impossible to live out. There is this human desire to have others agree with us, and agree to do things the way we would like them done. It is an elusive ideal, to live in unity.

Holy Father, my opinions and my “stances” should never get in the way of my belief in you and your sovereignty, and my acceptance and love for all of your creation. May I always look to you for direction. Amen

John 17: 20-21 My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Jesus prayed for his disciples as well as the people of his time and all future believers. His prayers encompassed all of creation present and future generations. The Bible is our legacy to know Jesus Christ.

John 17:20–21 I am not praying for these (the disciples) alone, but also for the future believers will come to me because of the testimony of these. My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind. With this prayer, Jesus is also praying for you and me. He is praying that we will work for unity among our believers. Unity among believers seems as far away as ever before even in our own denomination. I ask myself, don’t those in control see the people they are losing just because they cannot heed Jesus prayer. Be of one heart and mind. Prayer: gracious God, my prayer today is for our leaders everywhere, church, community, State, country, and…

John 17:20-21

” . . . that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”

Jesus knew the end of His earthly life was very near and offered this final prayer. It says a great deal that His final instructions involved living in unity. Jesus did not pray that his disciples preach this or that. He did not urge them to take over the synagogues. Jesus’ high-priestly prayer was for all who believe to be in unity of spirit. Through that unity they were to bring others to belief. Do we still have it in us?

Prayer - Father, Son and Spirit, One in three and the model of perfect…
