A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, December 2

Psalm 85:8-13

I will listen to what God the LORD says;

he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—

but let them not turn to folly.

Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land.

Love and faithfulness meet together;

righteousness and peace kiss each other.

Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,

and righteousness looks down from heaven.

The LORD will indeed give what is good,

and our land will yield its harvest.

Righteousness goes before him

and prepares the way for his steps.

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

I am quite certain that peace is my most common prayer request. I pray to feel at peace, and I pray that another may find peace in a difficult time. Today’s scripture points out that God has already given us peace. It is there for the taking. When we are walking with God, we have access to His peace. So, there is peace in the relationship- it is part of our relationship with God. Even with this fresh perspective, I know I still need to pray. Prayer puts me in a right relationship with God and opens the door that I may have closed by drifting off. God’s peace is one of his many beautiful gifts to us.

Holy Lord, thank you for these verses today from your Word. They are so very helpful to me. There is no beginning or end to your supply of peace. I am truly thankful. Amen

Stop and Breathe

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

In my spiritual journey I do realize how important it is to manage my emotions.  I can’t help how I act when I am having a hard time. I truly believe that this is a normal human reaction. God wants us all to have wonderful peace, his perfect peace. I have said this many times, that The best thing for inexperience is experience and he gives us the responsibility of letting his peace, calm our every…

Psalm 85:8-13. John 14:27. Stop and Breathe

Both of these verses speak of peace. Peace is something we all long for. I've been noticing lots of advice lately about dealing with anxiety--in hopes of bringing peace. Most of the advice centers on breathing. Everyone has a different method, from slow deep breathing to fast quick breathing! However, none of them mention Breath Prayers. I know my friend Bev uses breath prayers often. Pastor Steve Garness-Holmes ends each advent devotion he sends with a breath prayer related to the devotion. I send them to Bev each day. I need to use them more often in place of my worries.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me to think of using breath prayers t…

Psalm 85:8-13 / John 14:27

Interestingly, what came to my mind when reading the Psalm reading’s last verse, “Righteousness will go before Him, And shall make His footsteps our pathway.” was the recollection of walking in deep snow. I would purposefully look for footsteps already taken and use them as my path. Just like the footsteps in the snow that make a journey easier, God makes our journey here on earth easier, He gives us the peace we need, we just have to take the steps he has laid out for us. We don’t need to trudge through life on our own, the “footsteps” of His peace are always available., the peace He leaves with us, the peace He gives…

Psalm 85:8-13

Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.” This verse from Psalm 85 is a reminder to me that the road to peace is actually a two-way street. We must remain faithful and trust that God’s righteousness will provide the peace Jesus promises in John 14:27. When faith wavers, our connection to God’s righteousness is weakened. Given our inherent righteousness was irreparably damaged in the Garden, we are utterly dependent on God’s perfect righteousness for our salvation. Faith puts us on that road and with it comes the peace that handles all the potholes, obstacles and hazards in it.

Amen - Gracious God, our road is sometimes difficult. I pray for the peace that…
