A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, August 9

John 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Again I am struck with the idea of being identified as a disciple just by loving others. Clearly this behavior was enough to cause someone to stand out in a crowd, even nearly 2000 years ago! Is it really that difficult to allow love to guide our actions? I suppose it is, and if I am to truly be a disciple of Jesus, I need to remember this. In every situation, at all times, remember to love. Even as I write these words, I know how difficult this is.

God above, fill me with your love so that I will never forget. Help me to act with love in every possible situation. Amen

John 13: 34-35 “A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

I realize that I cannot love as Jesus loves, but I can certainly attempt to replicate this love for all. When I trust in his name and have the Holy Spirit within my heart, I can walk in spirit, truth and love. It is with Christ in me that I am able to follow this command and shore his love with those I meet.

Dearest Lord as I attempt to be obedient to your command, I know that I fall short of…

John 13:34–35 It seems so simple. Just love everyone. Yes, everyone. Jesus had asked this of us before with his story of the good Samaritan. He has set the bar very high and I know my actions do not always reach the mark. I do try, but in a world so full of evil, it is very difficult. I know I need to work on this great commandment. Prayer: gracious God, help me to see something to love in everyone I meet. Amen

John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The Bible says we are to love one another. Sounds good, but can I do it, not without the Holy Spirit. Some people are just irritating. Even people at church can be difficult to love. Sometimes we sing a chorus in church: Im so glad you’re a part of the family of God and then we look at the person beside us and wonder how did you become a part of…

John 13:34-35

There we have it. We have read the Great Commission this week and now the Great Commandment. Discipleship’s essence is Jesus’ distillation of the Ten Commandments - even the whole of the law - as love of God and love of neighbor. As long as these principles remain our constant focus, we can remain assured that we are being authentic disciples of Christ. We are concerned this is too difficult, but I liken it to telling the truth versus a lie. The former may seem difficult, but always turns out much easier in the long run because lies must multiply to cover the previous lie while the truth stands on its own. It is the same with living…
