A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, August 20

Colossians 1:16-17

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

These verses are about Jesus, and they praise Him for being present for all of creation. The commentary explanations that I read were very thought provoking, but I am still somewhat puzzled. My take-away today is that Jesus was part of the plan from the beginning, and all of creation happened for him and because of him. What are the ways this understanding can draw me closer to Jesus? I am hopeful that some others will help me to better understand.

Holy Lord, sometimes I am confused by scripture. Help me to better understand. I am so thankful for all of your creation, especially for Jesus. Amen

Colossians 1:16-17

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

You and I can only realize and experience the glory of God because Christ lives in us.  We can trust with confidence in three aspects of who he is , his power, his wisdom and his

goodness. I don’t think my comments can come anywhere near what Paul has  said about Jesus in the above scripture. He is basically our hope of things seen and not seen for better living…

Colossians 1:16-17

Could Paul really have meant “all things”? He cites “thrones or powers or rulers or authorities,” and I can’t help but wonder about wicked rulers and authorities of the past and present. How are they part of the beauty of creation? Were they created to somehow glorify God by proving how horrible humankind can be? And when rulers or authorities are horrible, how is it they can generate a following and maintain their power? What does that say about people in general? It is in these questions where trust in the Lord must fill the gaps. I must remember and believe “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Not having God’s eternal perspective,…
