A Daily Devotion for Tuesday August 13

1Peter 5: 6-7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

These verses challenge us to trust God. I say I trust God, but if I am still holding on to anxiety, worry or any other useless emotion, am I really trusting? Or am I still hoarding all of that emotional energy, trying to make it work for me somehow? There could be a third verse here, a “7b”, which might say, ‘And he can help you to feel peace in anxiety’s place.’

Holy Lord, forgive me for my pretend addition to scripture. You have given me peace so many times, I feel empowered to share that reality. I am thankful for the many, many times you have given me peace. I will continue to share that reality. Amen

1 Peter 5:6-7

I have no problem about giving my burdens to God. I do know he cares for me. The problem I seem to have is that I continue to hang on to the burden and think about it constantly. I do trust that God is listening but I seem to still need to be in control of the situation. It does bother me that I seem unable to totally trust him with my worries.

Prayer: Gracious God, do not give up on me. I know you won’t, but help me with my own trust issues. Amen

I find it interesting that laying one’s burdens down requires an element of humility. It seems even back in the first century there may have been a prideful reluctantance to ask for help. Knowing that someone who truly loves you always “has your back” should be the key to letting go of that pride and the burdens that go with it. The difficult part of this verse for me is in understanding what is “in due time.” I suppose that not fretting about when and celebrating that God will is essential in applying this verse to my life.

Prayer - Almighty God, help me to trust in Your might as well as Your timing in addressing my…

1 Peter 5:6-7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

THE GOD of creation allows me to enter His presence ANYTIME I feel the need, and I truly believe he hears every word. The only one who is all powerful, all knowing, and who cares more about me than anyone. He listens in any language, in any emotion. And He understands. So, instead of fretting about things or allowing myself to be overwhelmed with worry or continually anxious, what  I should remember to do is to take all of my energy I’ve spend being…
