A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, Aug. 1

Luke 24:9-10

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.

It was women who found the empty tomb, and first brought this news to the disciples. Why did God entrust this important role to a group of women? The apostles didn't even believe them, but had to go and see for themselves. Jesus trusted that the women would be doing exactly what was required of them, and knew they would come upon the empty tomb first, before anyone else. I can't pretend to understand the reasons behind this plan, but it includes women in a most pivotal role. This encourages me and reminds me that I am part of a bigger plan, and have a role to play.

Holy Lord, I am blessed to be a part of your plan. Lead me. Amen

I think it was wonderful of God to allow these female followers to be the first ones to bring the good news of his story. While I realize this is not true in every case, and I am certainly not meaning any offense, women in general are better in giving the details of a story than men. We enjoy hearing and telling all the little particulars – to every detail.…

Luke 24:9-10

So the eleven and perhaps other followers were locked in the Upper Room in fear for their lives. BUT, the women knew what had to be done. They may have been as afraid as well. But they new the ritual they needed to perform was important so they went to the tomb. That’s how it is with women. The Lord knew they were reliable and would be good messengers. I am sure he also knew the men would not believe them. After all they were women. I was disappointed that neither of my study bibles spent any time explaining about the significance of the women in these verses.

Prayer: Gracious God, I’m glad you chose the women t…
