A Daily Devotion for Thursday, September 11

2 Corinthians 1:3-10

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

It is interesting that the Upper Room offers both of these readings today to encourage us to consider God’s comfort for those who are suffering. One is very succinct, the other rather long and wordy. Today I would choose the brief and succinct. Although comfort from friends and family is vitally important, it is not everything. We also need to turn to God for comfort. God is close by, waiting to comfort us. And the peace of God does transcend all understanding! Amen!

Thank you God, for always being with me, comforting me whenever I ask, and probably when I don’t ask. Amen

Psalm 34:18

Although I believe I focus more on what is positive in my life, I have endured heartache and disappointment. What that has done for me is create a sense of empathy when I see people in despair. I may not always know the words or actions to take, but I certainly know I can pray for those who suffer. In our life group at church, I listen to individuals as they bring up their prayer requests, and I try to focus on each one as they are spoken and truly pray for each one of them as they seek comfort and strength. I know that God will provide that for them.

2 Corinthians 1:3-10 Paul audaciously claims we are comforted by God in our afflictions so that we may be a comfort to others. That comfort may be specific acts of help or kindness and should always include prayer. When there is an open chapel or church on our walk we will stop, rest our feet and pray. The comfort we receive is hopefully reflected in the way we interact with other pilgrims in the Way.

Prayer - Holy Spirit, continue to walk with me today, giving of your strength and comfort so that I may share it with others. Amen
