A Daily Devotion for Thursday, March 26

Philippians 4:10-13

I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.


1Thessalonians 5:(16-17),18

(Rejoice always, pray continually,) give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.


The devotion today is a beautiful one. Here is a man in India, worrying about “property disputes, family issues and the uncertainty of the future.” Along comes an elderly man in old weathered clothing, looking beat-up, pushing his cart full of “scraps”. The impoverished man is singing praises to God while the other is worrying about earthly matters. It made me think of that saying, “You may be the only Bible some people ever read.” In this case, the elderly man with the cart was like scripture to the writer of the devotion. We can learn from anyone, anywhere, who is a believer shining God’s light. They may be illuminating our path.


Holy Lord, I know that you put others in my path to help and direct me to your will. May my eyes and heart be open to these encounters. Your ways can be unexpected. Amen

Contentment is unattainable by the world’s standards. Time and the Spirit have convinced me true contentment is found through faith. I am currently sitting comfortably in silence and solitude in a little house in Randolph, NH. I attended a Scout Troop Court of Honor in Littleton last night and will be at a Cub Pack meeting tonight in Bethlehem. Nothing flashy, just parents and children trying to learn to be their best selves through the timeless values of Scouting - duty to God, duty to country, duty to others, duty to self. I am experiencing more joy and contentment than any expensive trip abroad, an elaborate meal in a world-class restaurant or driving a Maserati could provide…
