A Daily Devotion for Thursday, June 17

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

These beautiful words from Isaiah help us to remember the very source of peace: Jesus Christ. He is our Father and Counselor. I am kind of preoccupied this morning with the concept of world peace. If the entire world knew Jesus, would that bring world peace? I am sure the early Jews expected a savior to save them and give them peace. But they thought it would be different, and they continue to wait for their savior. I know Jesus is my way to peace, and I believe He is the way to peace in the world.

Holy God, thank you for Isaiah and his words of comfort and direction. Thank you for today, and for the rain that is coming. Thank you for family and friends and true love. Amen

Isaiah 9:6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest upon his shoulders. And he will be called wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace. He is my peace. If there is any peace I can find in this crazy world, it is early morning. Just me, God, my Bible, and my devotions. It is a quiet and reflective time. Then the newspaper comes, and the messed up world intrudes. I value my time alone with him. Jesus is my prince of peace. I often wonder if everyone could benefit from some reflective, quiet moments of peace with Christ. Prayer: gracious God, May Our prayers for peace be heard. Amen

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

And the government shall be upon his shoulder I recognized the words as part of a Bible verse that makes up a chorus in Handel’s “ Messiah,” The whole verse describes the identity of the promised Messiah or Christ: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace…

Ephesians 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

All the wonderful names for God have a new meaning for me. As my Counselor I find knowledge, as Mighty God and Everlasting Father I know that he is there for me whenever I am in need, and as the Prince of Peace I find a serenity in my life that I have just begun to experience.

Dearest Lord, you are so wonderful. You are always there for me; I only have to pray to you. You have given me a peace in…

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a child is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Councilor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The 2 phases that hit me are “the government will be on his shoulders” and “Prince of Peace.” I believe that Isaiah was expecting a leader to be born to lead the physical world and bring peace to it. Jesus brought internal peace to us regardless of what is happening in the real world. It is up to people to bring peace to the world.

Dear Lord, thank you for giving us the way to feel peace in a chaotic world. We pray…

Isaiah 9:6

This child, this Prince of Peace, is born to us. The phrase, “to us” is emphasized by being used twice in the same sentence. As a prophecy of the birth of Jesus, the message is that His birth, while to a certain young woman at a specific time and place, was at the same time to all humankind in all times and all places. I also struggle with the question that Becky raised, wondering if a totally Christian world would be a perpetually peaceful world. It seems so far beyond the human condition as to be impossible. This may be one promise of the new heaven and new earth and should be a motivational model for they way…
