A Daily Devotion for Thursday, July 7

Matthew 6: 25-27

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or stow away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “

I have gone to this verse many many times in my life for comfort. Accepting our situation is sometimes a bitter pill to swallow. Accepting risks inherent in life may be frightening. Just having children and loving them intensely can feel like standing on a cliff at times. Ultimately, we are not in control. There is often little to nothing we can do to change our situation. But we can always turn to God, who loves us, and wants us to be at peace.

Father God, you are with me always. Your Spirit dwells in me, and I need only turn and ask for peace. Help me to remember. Amen

It seems that we have paraphrased two different scripture lessons today. And this is alright.

These 3 verses emphasize that no matter who we are and what we are, God is there for us. I have always concentrated on the last verse as it applies to my life. I…

Matthew 6:25–27 Despite having read these verses many, many times, I still find myself a worrier. I do trust God and have faith that he will do the right thing, but I still feel the need to be concerned about a situation. I read that worry often immobilizes, but concern can move you into action. Yet, I still worry. Prayer: gracious God, you know me better than I know myself. Help me accept and trust that you are in charge, not me. Amen

Matthew 25:27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned, I would have received it back with interest.

I often wonder if I could put my good works on deposit for the times I falter. I know that is not how life works with belief in Jesus, but it would be nice. To me this verse tells me that I should always do the best I can in order to gain access to heaven. I should not wait until the end to do all that Jesus asks of me.

Dearest Lord, give me the grace to always do the right things even when I am tempted with the bad. Help…

I agree Barb. Then I read Becky’s and realized that I missed the 6.

Matthew 25:27

Well Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.

A master gives a certain amount of money to 3 different servants, with the instructions to invest it. He gave each one according to their ability. Two did very well and were richly rewarded. The third man, not so much. all the master asked was for him to do what he could. He did nothing , he failed. He blamed his master because he feared him, so,he hid the money. Fear caused the man to do nothing. God doesn’t ask us to do what someone else can do…
