A Daily Devotion for Thursday, April 14

Philippians 4:11

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

This verse is much more meaningful with a few of the verses before and after included. When I think about balance, I think of not falling in one direction or another. I think of stability and contentment. But it is also easy to slip into imbalance; to move to one side or the other. With God, my life can be in balance no matter what is happening. Not only can I better resist temptation when I listen to the Holy Spirit, but I can find peace and comfort when circumstances push me around.

Holy One, you keep me centered, and bring me back to you with your grace. I am so thankful. Amen

Philippians 4:11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

Paul has found balance at this time in his life. He is content, regardless of the circumstances. I will attempt to be content with my life. It is a learned skill, but one that is necessary. Paul learned to find joy, no matter what his circumstances were and I will attempt to do the same.

Dearest Lord, give me the grace to always be content with my life. Help me find the balance needed to be in this world and honor you. I thank you for the serenity I have now and pray that it will continue by…

Philippians 4:11

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.

For me, Ecclesiastes 3: 1: is one of many verses that helps to identify balance .( There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.) We should be balanced in our everyday lives. We should use food, material possessions, modern medication, sex, etc without worshipping them or making them sinful. When it comes to our regular lives, the Bible says we should be balanced, placing our hope fully in God, who richly provides us with everything. We should be balanced by loving God and enjoying earthly ble…

Philippians 4:11

For the gymnast to excel on the balance beam she must devote countless hours to training. So too with achieving balance in life. Paul did not write he was naturally or constitutionally content. He wrote he learned how to be content. Bombarded as we are in this prosperous country by constant messages of “you deserve more,” and “if you only had this car, drink this beer or used this deodorant your life will be perfect” we must train ourselves to be content in our circumstances. Balance can be found and learned in the application of the simple serenity prayer written by Reinhold Niebuhr.

Prayer - “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,…

Philippians 4:11 Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. Contentment. We live in a world where many people will tell you they are not really content with their lives. I think their lives are out of balance. They are looking ahead and always wanting more. Because of this, they miss the present. Paul had so little, but what he did have was God‘s love and a mission to spread the good news of Jesus. It seems that whatever Paul had or didn’t have, he understood he really had all he needed in Jesus’ story. Prayer: gracious God, remind me to find joy in all of life, the good and the not…
