Acts 20:34-35
“You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
Recently my friend Kenda and I talked about the concept of “love languages”. In close relationships, this concept can be very instructive and helpful. In the context of service to others, though, it is trickier to apply. When we do service for others, or give to others in need, we are often giving what we think they need. But, we are showing God’s love by giving or providing a service regardless of what our own “love language” may be. Maybe simply loving our neighbor in any and all ways is God’s love language and should be our first thought. We may have a preferred way of showing our love, but it is always important to make an effort to see what is needed or desired.
Holy Lord, thank you for your Word. Thank-you for sending Jesus to show us the way. Help me to serve others in a way which is truly worthy of your approval. Amen

Act 20:35-35
It is better to give than receive, I find it very fulfilling to give as well, the act of putting others ahead of yourself is how, l believe, God would have us live. Whether it be time, talent or material gift, giving is a wonderful gift in and of itself.
Dear Lord, thank you for providing me with the wonderful feeling of warmth when I give. Amen

Acts 20:34-35
You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It Acts 20:34-35
It is a well known saying “ It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” I know I can personally attest to this statement. Jesus is saying that when we give – whether it be time, money, energy, service, encouragement, etc, it will be a greater blessing than if we were receiving. Giving gives my heart great joy. When I give, it…
Acts 20:34-35
Paul has every right to remind us about giving and receiving. Paul never expected to be paid or taken care of in all his travels. He did accept places to stay but expected little else. His example of serving others is here for a reason. Often when we are at our most comfortable, we forget others might not be and need our help even more. So often I read about people who have been helped by an organization, and now are voluteering or working for that organization. This is what Paul's selfless example is all about.
Prayer: Gracious God, While I know I'm not as selfless as Paul, may I always remember to serve others. AMEN
Acts 20:34-35
Giving of ourselves without expectation of return is a message seen throughout the New Testament. Selfishness is a rejection of the teachings of Jesus and dishonors God. If it can be said at life’s end, “He or she lived a life marked by service,” then simultaneously there will be a voice from heaven saying, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
Prayer - Lord, please keep me pointed in the way of service. Purge from me any selfish urges that do not reflect Your precept that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Amen
