A Daily Devotion for Monday, December 9

2 Corinthians 10:17-18

But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

We must always remember to give the glory to God. If I manage to do something helpful for another, or to bring joy to another somehow, it is not my accomplishment. It is the work of the Holy Spirit, and God’s will, that any of these things take place. Forgetting God’s contribution, or ignoring it, is the worst form of pride, in my opinion. I am guilty of this, I am sure.

Holy Lord, your hand is in all that I do. Help me to remember to be thankful, and to refrain from taking credit for work done in your name. My life is yours. Amen

2 Corinthians 10:17-18

As the scriptures say, "If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord. When people commend themselves it doesn't count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.

The last line of these verses from The Message versions says it all. "It's what God says about you that makes the difference." It is only human to want recognition when we do something well. The problem here is that often leads to Pride on our part and leaves God out of the equation. I know that my successes are because of God's help.

Prayer: Gracious God, please keep Pride out of my feelings of accomplishment. Fill my feelings with thankfulness. AMEN

Corinthians 10:17–18

All blessings come from God. We should praise him for those blessings. When you do good, don’t put patch yourself on the back. We surely do not do these things alone. We can feel good about doing good things, but must give God the credit.

Dear Lord, help me to not be boastful when I do good things, help me to focus on You as the One who orchestrates our blessings and understand that the good I do is to your credit. Amen.

I believe we can all recognize a person who is so full of pride, all they can talk about is me, myself and I.  When we are facing someone who is so confident that it turns into arrogance, I will stay calm and composed. One of the most significant acts of pride is low self-esteem and self-worth.. When people feel bad about their own flaws and insecurities, they tend to mask them with feelings of pride. Pride can be a temptation during times in my…

2 Corinthians 10:17-18

Human accolades can feel good and taking pride in a job well done is not in and of itself sinful, but when my sole focus is on receiving accolades and recognition, pride has replaced God on my priority list. It has taken me far too long to realize that any good I have done and am able to do stems not from me, but from the Holy Spirit working through me. Left on my own, good is a simply a fortunate accident. In the long run, it is better to submit to and wait on the Lord to guide my life, giving God the praise and glory when good emerges.
