A Daily Devotion for Monday, December 23

Psalm 127:2

In vain you rise early

and stay up late,

toiling for food to eat—

for he grants sleep to those he loves.

We can’t work our way to happiness or peace. Only God can give us true, comforting peace. I really should remember this verse when I am struggling, if for no other reason than to remind myself to turn in a different direction. I probably simply need to turn back to God and stop trying to fix things alone. Rest follows.

Holy Lord, you are always here, with me. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Never changing, but always doing a new thing. My ‘thank-you’ seems too small, but you know my heart is full. Amen

This passage reminded me immediately of a time when I was putting a lot of effort into a new promotion, effort/work that took me away from my family. I remember a particular incident involving my kids at extended care at their elementary school, I was the last parent to pick up their kids…again. That weekend, while shopping, and I am certain not by coincidence, I saw a little plaque for sale in a gift shop. The little plaque said “never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life “. I bought the plaque and hung it by the door that I came in every day from work and going forward I changed my habits, dramatically…

Psalm 127:2

We live is a culture that rewards overworking. People boast about working 60 hours a week and not needing much sleep. There are people who say they only need 4 hours of sleep a night. The problem with all of this is that their bodies and brains do need more. Payment for this excess will come in the form of illness or an accident at work. God does honor our hard work but He does not honor overworking ourselves to the detriment of our families and our health. He loves us and offers rest to those who love and honor Him.

Prayer: Gracious God, Thank you for the rest you offer me. AMEN

Psalm 127:2

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.

Our bodies were designed, by God, to have a period of sleep each day, and studies show that sleep provides us with many benefits - both for the body and the soul. For those that are saved by grace through faith in His saving  work, the Lord gives and continues to give many benefits - but without faith it is impossible for His children to please Him. How foolish to stress about getting up early and striving to work late into the night in order to supply…

The scriptures speakers to me especially at night when I’m tossing and turning and just having difficulties sleeping a restful sleep or in the morning when I’m fretting about all that I need to get done. Well a light dawns on me just recently oh, I haven’t said my nightly prayers or when I wake up this scripture again reminds me about worry about nothing !

Good and Gracious God I’m grateful for your reminders and the scripture here to put you first and also give it to up to you, I ask for your continued support and reminders with God all things are possible. Amen

Psalm 127:2

Our kids have long ago left the nest and are thriving in their own young adult worlds. In this season of life, while it serves no purpose to dwell on, I wonder sometimes if I paid too much attention to job and career and not enough on them. As we gather for Christmas I can take heart in how well they have done and are doing despite my shortcomings. Perhaps one important lesson they learned is to avoid the mistakes I made. That, I suppose, is a success of sorts.

Prayer - Lord please bless and comfort all children whose parents are so busy worrying about rising early and staying up late for the sake of jobs that…
