A Daily Devotion for Monday, December 22

Matthew 28: 18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.“

Psalm 71:8

My mouth is filled with your praise,

declaring your splendor all day long.

The writer of today’s Upper Room devotion wonders what will be the last words people hear from her. This thought has never crossed my mind. At first, I thought it was kind of unusual to wonder such a thing. We have no control over when our last words may be uttered. But, we certainly have control over what we say and do. While living each day in Christ, following God in all we do and say, and loving our neighbor as ourselves, we have a lot of control over what we leave behind when we leave a room. It may or may not be what we say that is remembered, but we are likely to be remembered for how we lived our lives and how we treated others.

Holy Lord, in this season of Advent, may I be especially aware of how I treat others. May I shine your light in every room that I enter, inviting others through my words and actions, to seek you. Amen

Matthew 28:18-20. Psalm 71:8. Final Words

Although I've never given much thought to my own final words, I've heard about plane crash victims texting their love to loved ones moments before. When Jerry's Uncle died a few year ago, his children, who were all with him, heard him say one word--beautiful! They found it wonderful and comforting to hear no matter how you interpret it. More important than my final words are those I speak every day. I am sure that God is disappointed with me at times. I hope he mostly hears my love and caring for all around me.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me pause and be silent when my words may hurt others. AMEN

This verse is about seeing God's beauty and majesty everywhere and making that the focus of our daily words and life, from birth to old age. Also serving as a witness to others. A heart deeply affected by God's goodness naturally leads to words of praise, showing deep thankfulness. The psalmist knew the faithfulness of God through his younger years and now asked that God continue that faithfulness in his old age and as his strength fails. He knew that man’s strength diminishes with old age, but God’s strength does not. Unlike the…

Matthew 28:18-20

The Upper Room submission today made me think of how I could do better, be kinder with my words. Are there times when I’m over critical or less than gracious than I should be with my words?Probably. Are my words always acceptable to you?…Perhaps not. That is truthful reality. I am not implying that I am a cruel and vicious person by any means but sometimes my words can be sharp and certainly not Christ-like. I must be better about what crosses my lips and focus on the patience and love that Christ has shown me. That love and patience glorifies God.

Dear God, please help me to use my lips to spread Your Word, spread Your love…
