A Daily Devotion for Monday, August 30

I John 3:18

Dear children, let us not live with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Integrity relies on putting what we believe to be good and true into action. I can say anything. But it is my follow-through which “tells the tale”. How can I be more genuine, and more active in my faith? It seems simple enough, but I struggle with the answer to this question. It comes down to knowing what God is leading me to do, and I am not always sure of that.

Lord God, lead me please. I want to live the life of a true and honest disciple. Amen

1 John 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and truth. Some times one sentence scripture can be the most powerful, just like this one. Does my character reflect the likeness of Christ. Do I love others as Christ loves me. God’s love is different from every other type of human love, because it dwells from his spirit of truth. Jesus laid down His life. He sacrificed his life for you/me.and we are instructed to do the same for others. We are directed to give up some things for the benefit of others, simply put to love others. It is comparatively easy to love in word and tongue. It is reasonably simple to s…

1 John 3: 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

We have been searching for ways to help people with our actions and thereby show them the love of Christ. What does it mean to love with truth? I’m not really sure about this but I’d say it has to do with what is in our hearts as we love with actions. If our actions feel like a sacrifice or a duty then that is probably not what John had in mind.

Dear Lord help us to know what actions to take to glorify You and help us to love others willingly and joyfully. Amen.

1 John 3:18. Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. When I retired from teaching, people asked me what I was going to do. The answer was easy, I hoped to make a difference. As someone brought up in the church, it was the church that would offer me that opportunity. No matter what church I have attended over my lifetime, I have always found many ways to use my gifts and talents to serve my church and my community and God. Just like Church should be a verb, so should love. They are active not passive words. What we believe is shown by what we do. Prayer: Gracious G…

1 John 3: 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

I feel this verse goes into what was discussed last Tuesday, about giving money to people begging on the roads and streets of our towns. If we say we love all and don’t show it by actions, it is meaningless. What we believe is shown by what we do. However, there are exceptions because they may use the money to harm themselves. Paul said in 2 Thessalonians 3: 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” I find this verse quite harsh. We ha…

I John 3:18

John’s letter urges his readers to walk the talk. He seems to be on the same page as James who declared “faith without works is dead.“ Pastor Jen highlighted this concept yesterday in James’ admonition to be doers of the Word and not just hearers. Churches that tangibly live the faith serve others beyond the walls of the church, and do so in the name of Jesus. The latter may drive secular humanists crazy as they insist believers can indulge in our fairy tales while gathered in a church, but must never talk of such nonsense in the public square. We must, of course, peaceably resist this intimidation by continuing to serve whole-heartedly and to be ready…
