A Daily Devotion for Monday, April 20

Psalm 34:15-22

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,

and his ears are attentive to their cry;

but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to blot out their name from the earth.

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;

he delivers them from all their troubles.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

The righteous person may have many troubles,

but the LORD delivers him from them all;

he protects all his bones,

not one of them will be broken.

Evil will slay the wicked;

the foes of the righteous will be condemned.

The LORD will rescue his servants;

no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

The first part of verse 21 stood out to me this morning; ‘Evil will slay the wicked.’ I had to read it a few times to understand. I think God is saying that if we choose to follow Satan, we will end up with Satan. And the ending will not be a good one, even if we feel that the path seems easier or better or more lucrative, etc. In the end, we live better lives following Christ, and in doing so, we are choosing an eternity with Him. God is looking out for us, listening for us, and comforting us, as long as we seek Him and follow Him.

Holy Lord, we know that life is not easy here on earth. But you have made it beautiful, as long as we seek you out, and walk in your path. Thank- you for all of your many blessings. Amen

Psalm 34:15-22

Being a believer, trusting God and accepting Christ does that mean we will have a trouble free life, BUT God will be there if there are troubles, always watching, always listening, always loving.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being with me always and for being the balm on my wounds when I am troubled, confused or doubtful. Please remind me you are always near. Amen.

Psalm 34:15-22 A Balm for the Brokenhearterd

Psalm 34:18. "The Lord if close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Today's devotion title "Balm for the Brokenhearted took me right away to a hymn--There is a Balm in Gilead. Balm is a rather old fashioned work for a soothing salve/lotion to calm the skin. This song speaks directly to verse 18. The Lord is our balm to heal us and revive us.

Prayer: Gracious God, many thanks to the hymn composers who use your ideas to help us understand the magnitude of your love for us. AMEN

Psalm 34:15-22

For me, in this moment, finding comfort in this psalm requires an eternal perspective which is admittedly difficult to achieve. I look around our world and see countless examples of forces of darkness and evil people not having their names blotted from the earth, but thriving, winning and exulting in their success. I have to attend to what I have been called and assigned to attend to and trust God to fulfill the promises of Scripture. Perhaps it is as individual as this morning’s Upper Room contributor who finds God’s protection and love amid her grief. It is true the righteous person may have many troubles. Being assured of relief, perhaps not until the life to come, requires…
