A Daily Devotion for Friday, March 31

Psalm 119:36

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.

This verse makes me think of Brother Lawrence. He spent much of his life essentially training himself to think of God continually. His heart and his mind were always with God. This, of course, led to an awesome relationship. And I imagine this did not leave much space in BL's head for selfish gain. With God on our mind, how can we be selfish or stingy?

Lord God, help me to feel the presence of your Holy Spirit within me. Help me to make compassionate, gracious decisions. Amen

Psalm 119:36

NLT – give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money.

MSG – give me an appetite for your words of wisdom, and not for piling up loot.

NCV- Make me want to keep your rules instead of wishing for riches.

Money, loot, and riches vs Keeping God’s laws. In today’s culture, the money, loot, and riches often win out. We do need money and things to live in today’s world, but we don’t need to love them more than God and the way he has taught us to live. Psalm 119:36

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain

The heart of each person, even a Christian, can quickly lead us astray. We can certainly recognize the danger and pray that we would keep our heart aligned with God rather than with our own selfish gains. The Scriptures are clear that we are often our own worst enemy! You and I believe God’s word. It is not based on just feeling like spending time in God’s word. It is based on the fact that God’s word is truth. God promises wisdom to those who will pursue it with all their heart. Since I don’t have the spiritual wisdom to get through a singl…

Psalm 119:36 This verse, along with Becky’s reflection, reminds me of what Jesus says in Matthew 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What we value tells the world a great deal about our spiritual status and relationship with God. Selfish gain is the evil child of greed and pride and is beneath anyone who claims to be a person of faith.

Prayer - Bountiful God, Your example of self-giving in the Son and the Spirit, renewed in us through baptism and holy communion is what we are charged to model to those who do not know You. Keep my thoughts on Your gifts and away from selfish gain. Amen
