Psalm 18:28
You, LORD, keep my lamp burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.
I just finished reading a most beautiful book, which has been so very much on my mind. It is Cry, the Beloved Country. This verse from Psalm 18 should be part of any description of the novel. The book is about race relations in South Africa, and was written in the late 1940s by Alan Paton. But it is also about people and faith and the clear and evident work of God in the lives of those who choose Him. If we stand with God and look for His light, he will lead us into a better place- always.
Holy Lord, I love your Word most of all, but also love reading about people who follow you, and who know your Word as well. I am thankful for your many gifts to so many, and the gift of creativity. Amen

Psalm 18:25-32
This devotion reminds me that we are to pay attention to those around us and then the Holy Spirit will light the way for us to be of help. Despite an abusive father and most likely an abusive husband, her Mom taught her prayer and God's love. As she grew up, others paid attention and saw her needs and again helped by lighting her way. The most uplifting part of her story is that the Holy Spirit has lit the way for her and she is now an advocate for others like herself.
Prayer: Gracious God, help me pay attention to those around me so I may be an advocate to someone who needs me. AMEN
Psalm 18:28
When I read this I had an unusual visual in my mind…I am walking down a dark cobblestone path with God by my side holding a brightly lit lantern. I drift off the path here and there but find my way back to the path guided there by the light. This has been my life. Thankfully the blessing of the lantern has always been there.
Heavenly Father, thank you for always being a guiding light and keeping me on Your path. I pray that I can be the light that leads to You for others in my life. Amen

A light in the dark

Psalm 18:28
For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
WOW if this writer didn’t hit the nail on the head. This verse uses the imagery of light and darkness to represent the difficult and confusing situations that victims of violence often face. The darkness represents the emotional pain, fear, uncertainty, and feelings of helplessness that come with being a victim of violence. The light represents God's presence, guidance, comfort, and the hope for healing and rebuilding . By stating that God turns darkness into light, offers a message of hope, indicating that God can transform difficult circumstances into…
Psalm 18:28
The burning lamp for the author of today’s Upper Room reflection was the mentors she encountered throughout her life. One of the assignments in my Spiritual Formatiom class in seminary was writing a “spiritual autobiography.” In gathering my thoughts on this, the most prominent theme was mentorship. From my parents to school and Sunday school teachers to Scoutmasters to clergy to professional role models and true friends, my life - like everyone’s - has been visited by angels who have had great impact on my faith and the way I live my life. The flame of their burning lamps refined my life, but did not perfect it. My sinful nature is entirely dependent on the Holy Spirit to…
