Psalm 116:1-2

I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;

he heard my cry for mercy.

Because he turned his ear to me,

I will call on him as long as I live.

Reading these verses and thinking about the act of listening uncovers a new thought for me. For the writer, it was being heard that bound his heart to God forever. He doesn't say that God healed him or rescued him from danger or even that he was comforted by God. "Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live." We know God hears us, and that in itself is enough.

Holy Lord, I know that you listen, and that you hear our prayers. We do not always get the answer we hope for, but we are heard. Because you listen, we come to you. Thank-you, Lord. Amen

Psalm 116: one – two

As I read these verses, a beautiful picture came to mind. I wish I was an artist. I would love to paint a picture of God/Jesus bending down to listen to a child’s prayer. I would then show it to all children so they might understand why prayer is so powerful. It is because of who is listening.

Prayer: gracious God, I know you were there listening to all our prayers. Amen

(I tried googling some art but nothing was even close to what I envisioned.)

Psalm 116-1-2

I love the Lord, because he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

In Psalm 116, the Psalmist reminds me of his own dire experiences, that there is one who hears and listens to our cries and the cries of His people, even when no one else will give us the time of day. I must always remember that we worship a God who listens to our cries. Notice that the Psalmist does not begin with his testimony of what the Lord has done for him, but he begins where all praise and thanksgiving should start. As usual with…

Psalm 116: 1-2 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

The Lord hears my prayers. He answers them in His own way and time, but He listens. Having a God who is always there for me and always listens is a blessing. I will continue to call on him, speak to him, thank him and confess to him as long as I live.

Dearest Lord, you know my every thought. Thank you for always hearing my prayer. Give me patience when I want an immediate answer, and trust that you are working for my good.…

Psalm 116:1-2 An all too common intergenerational obstacle is the sense of the younger that they are not being heard by the older and vice versa. The psalmist speaks of the sense of loyalty and dedication to God that is gained in the assurance that God listens to and hears us. Think of the progress that could be made in human relationships if the laments of, “you’re not listening to me” and “you haven’t heard a word I said” we’re somehow rendered obsolete.

Prayer - God, open my ears that I may hear with an open heart and mind in the same way You hear us. May I depended upon as one who truly listens. Amen
